Financial Women of SF – Tour of SF MOMA

A group of two dozen FWSF members gathered at the new and greatly expanded SF Museum of Modern Art on a cool Thursday evening in late September. We were met by our personal guide for a tour of the Fisher Collection. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable about the Fisher Collection and told us many ‘inside’ stories about the artists and their relationships with the Fishers.

The Fishers have loaned their entire collection of art, about 1,100 pieces from over 180 artists, to SF MOMA. The Collection spans three floors in the new wing of the Museum. The guide explained that the Fishers met personally with each artist and got to know them well – which explains why the Collection has so many pieces by the same artist. The Collection has significant concentrations of work by Andy Warhol, Richard Serra, Ellsworth Kelly and Gerhard Richter to name a few.

As we moved through the galleries and floors, our guide called out to the group “Financial Women, gather over here!” It was awe-inspiring to see some well-known works by artists like Andy Warhol and Richard Serra.

The new SF MOMA wing is a tour de force that tripled the gallery space at the museum. We ended the tour with a view of two massive installations: The Living Wall, which is the largest living wall in the US at 30 feet high and 4,400 square feet and Richard Serra’s structure, Sequence.

Our group was so impressed with what we saw that many have vowed to return soon to get lost in the myriad of galleries at the ‘new’ SF MOMA.
